Summer Sunrise Quilt Along: Week 13
Updated: Aug 27, 2019
This is our last week for making top blocks! We are going to focus on what will be the bottom row of the quilt and constructed out of the large hourglasses, pinwheels and rail blocks that you have previously made. Unlike our previous weeks we will only be making two blocks this week, one will be square and the other rectangular so that each row of sand can be one continuous piece. And we are going to start at the shoreline which means starting out with the sand.
For cutting the sand you are going to use a 5 ½ inch strips. For this set you are going to cut 1 piece that is 15 ½ inches wide (it should be 5 ½ by 15 ½ inches) and cut 3 pieces that are 20 ½ inches wide pieces,(the pieces should be 4 ½ by 20 ½ inches each).
For the first large top block you need 4 white and light blue pinwheels, the 7 large rail blocks, 6 large hourglasses, and the sand pieces you just cut. Follow the chart to see where the hourglass and pinwheel and rail blocks are inserted. For the best effect alternate the rail blocks so some are horizontal and others are vertical. And remember to alternate your hourglasses to keep simulating the motion of the ocean.
For the second large top block you will need 13 large hourglasses and 3 blue pinwheels. Make sure you follow the chart to keep the alternating hourglasses going (I know, I know I say that for every block but it really is important).
Congratulations, you have now finished no just your large top blocks but all of the top blocks!!! Next week we are going to put together the quilt top using our top blocks.
