Summer Sunrise Quilt Along: Week 11

Last week we finished the small top blocks. This week we are going to move onto the medium top blocks, with all the practice you have been getting these should go together a lot faster than the small top blocks. For these blocks we are going to start at the shoreline and work out to the sea, which means you will be starting with the sand.

For cutting the sand you are going to use the 4 ½ inch strip that you cut for the small top blocks. Cut 2 pieces each 8 ½ inches wide (the pieces should be 4 ½ by 8 ½ inches each) and one piece 4 ½ inches wide (this should be a 4 ½ inch square).

For the first medium top block you need 1 hourglass, 3 white and light blue pinwheels, and the sand pieces you just cut. Follow the chart to see where the hourglass and pinwheel blocks are inserted, paired with the sand, they create the appearance of waves crashing on the beach.

For the second medium top block you only need 9 medium hourglasses. Make sure you follow the chart to keep the alternating pinwheels going. You will see the fifth block is very similar it just alternates the hourglasses a different way.

For the third medium top block you need 8 hourglasses and 1 of the medium blue pinwheels. As with the small top blocks just follow the chart to see where they are inserted. The big advantage is that these blocks have far fewer little blocks, then the small top blocks.

For the fourth medium top block you will once again need 8 hourglasses and 1 medium blue pinwheel. Double check the chart as you put this block together and make sure you insert the pinwheel in the right place.

For the fifth medium top block you just need 9 hourglasses. As with the second block the big key here is to make sure you follow the alternating pattern with the hourglasses.

Congratulations, you have finished the first row of medium top blocks! As promised these blocks were a lot easier than the small top blocks. Next week we are going to put together the second set of the medium top blocks. As always if you have any questions please let me know, you can leave a comment below or send an email.
