Summer Sunrise Quilt Along: Week 1
Welcome to the first week of the Summer Sunrise Quilt Along! If you missed the introduction you can find that post here, to get the list of materials needed.
Over the first three weeks we are going to make the pinwheel blocks that you need. The quilt uses pinwheels in two different colors and three sizes to make the surf. Altogether you will make 35 blocks. This first week is just cutting out the initial blocks, next week will be the half-square triangles and the third week we will finish the pinwheels.
To cut out the blocks you will use the white, light blue, and medium blue fabrics. All the cutting measurements include ¼ inch seam allowance so you don’t have to worry about including that (trying to reduce how much math you have to do). It’s a personal preference, but I did wash all of my fabrics before cutting.
For the small pinwheels cut 1 ¾ inch squares. You want to cut 8 squares from the white, 18 squares from the medium blue, and 26 squares from the light blue.
For the medium pinwheels cut 2 ¾ inch squares. You want to cut 14 squares from the white, 16 squares from the medium blue and 30 squares from the light blue.
For the large pinwheels cut 3 ¼ inch squares. You want 8 squares from the white, 6 squares from the medium blue, and 14 squares from the light blue.
This is the only time you will use the white or the light blue. The medium blue however will be used again in a few weeks to make the hourglasses.
Don’t worry there is enough material that even if you make a mistake when cutting (like I did), you will still be fine.
Next week we will start sewing! If you have any questions please leave a comment, or tag us on Instagram using @createmakedesign365 and #summersunriseqal
